Live in the present
The play incorporates a wide range of intriguing perspectives into its exploration of the themes of the marketplace, everyday life, and consumer culture, while continuously questioning what truly defines “the street” and “ordinary life.”
At the beginning, the first ten minutes immediately capture the audience’s attention through the performers’ intense and almost feverish enthusiasm for selling their products. As the performance progresses, the rhythm gradually shifts, creating moments of change and variation that allow the audience to remain engaged. However, in the following sections, the repetition of certain ideas and expressions becomes somewhat excessive. The constant intensity of the performers’ delivery, while powerful, sometimes feels physically demanding and begins to lose its impact.
Interestingly, when reflecting on the work after the performance, the overwhelming noise and repeated expressions reveal a certain strength and become part of the play’s overall impression. Nevertheless, from the perspective of viewing experience, the repetition occasionally creates a sense of length and fatigue. During the early part of the performance, some audience members chose to leave, suggesting that the work requires a certain level of patience and commitment from its viewers.
The interactive elements in the middle section feel somewhat forced, especially when compared with the more naturally integrated audience interaction in works such as Angel of History, where the use of simple actions, such as throwing cabbages, creates a stronger theatrical effect. However, the audience’s enthusiasm for this kind of direct interaction is undeniable, and once the interaction begins, the play enters a more unpredictable and imaginative phase.
The second half of the production expands rapidly into multiple perspectives, becoming increasingly bold, chaotic, playful, and full of creative energy. The ending returns to the struggles, perseverance, and emotional realities of ordinary people living within the “street” environment, creating a strong sense of recognition and emotional resonance.
Overall, the play presents many fascinating ideas and offers a unique interpretation of everyday life and social spaces. However, the frequent use of monologue-like philosophical statements sometimes weakens the dramatic progression, causing certain sections to lose the audience’s attention. Despite these limitations, the production remains a work worth experiencing — though audiences may need to stay with it until the second half to fully appreciate its ambition and emotional depth.
