Who Am I, and Where Do I Belong?
Neither Here Nor There is a quietly arresting piece of contemporary documentary theatre—an intimate hybrid of verbatim storytelling, autobiographical confession, and delicate shadow-puppetry. It traces the lives of two women at five, fifteen, and twenty-five: one a second-generation Chinese-Spanish daughter of immigrants, the other Danish-Nigerian-Italian, both negotiating the uneasy terrain of multiplicity.
What begins as a portrait of childhood quickly widens into a meditation on identity and inheritance. Their bright balloons—by turns whimsical, uncanny, and tender—become companions, alter egos, and floating embodiments of the expectations that tug at them. They hover like memories; they comfort like imagined friends; they expose the loneliness of being perpetually misread.
The dialogue, drawn from real voices yet shaped with theatrical clarity, is disarming in its honesty. Moments of raw confession sit beside flashes of humour; personal anecdotes open onto larger questions of race, belonging, and the fragile notion of “home.” The production’s use of shadow play introduces a quiet poetry, illuminating the emotional landscapes that words alone sometimes fail to reach.
What emerges is a work that feels both deeply personal and urgently universal. It speaks not only to second-generation and mixed-heritage audiences, but to anyone who has ever inhabited an in-between space—anyone who has asked, perhaps in the privacy of their own life, Who am I? Where do I belong?
In its search for connection, Neither Here Nor There offers something rare: a mirror for the culturally entangled, a gentle hand extended to the displaced, and a reminder that identity is as fluid and luminous as the shadows we cast.
